belated tune: Mr. Dream, “The Room”

If you’re not strictly a blog-perusing, music-hoarding hermit (I’m not pointing fingers), then perhaps you are familiar with those rare, savory 90s weekends on “New Rock” FM radio stations. There’s something comforting about those familiar grunge-y rockers, complete with their dirty bass tones, unsettling guitar riffs, and authoritative, often brutal lyrical content.

Mr. Dream is a critically acclaimed, Brooklyn-based trio that wants to give you that exact same feeling of strange musical solace, minus the initial familiarity. On February 28, they’ll release a six-song EP, Fatherland, on God Mode Records. As one could guess from the title, it’s all about an amusement park for fathers. And as one could guess from that, it’s awesomely weird (As punctuated by a loosely-strung title track that closes out with cries of “Hey, kids / You’ll never get it back!”).

“The Room” opens Fatherland in a devastating, deliberately stumbling manner. The bass line could be roughly translated into “An ass will soon be kicked.” The vocals range from two-note falsetto bits to such twisted lines as “Breaking bones you never knew you had.”

“The Room” is deceptively dynamic, not unlike the album. No two tracks on Fatherland sound too alike—just as no two rides at the Fatherland park would be too alike?—but they all make for quite the ride.

Mr. Dream will be touring with the recently-reviewed and also brilliantly noisy Cloud Nothings in March before finishing at SXSW. You can catch those dates below, along with another track from the EP, “What A Mess”, after the jump:
